Why Do Teeth Stain?

A person receiving in-office teeth whitening from a Rino Dentist CO.

While it may not look like it on the surface, tooth enamel is actually quite porous. This means it contains thousands of microscopic crevices for liquids to seep into. When you consume richly-pigmented substances, such as wine, coffee, dark colas and teas, mustard, soy sauce, ketchup, tomato sauce, and other items, you put your teeth at risk for staining. Brushing soon after having these foods and beverages can work to reduce stains, but much like how a wine stains a carpet, the substance can easily “set” in your enamel and cause your teeth to turn yellow. Teeth can also change color when exposed to tobacco products, but that’s hardly the only reason worth kicking a smoking habit.

While external factors are a very common reason for tooth stains, they aren’t the only factors. Sometimes people get too much fluoride at a young age, which leave their teeth with spots if their enamel was still developing. Certain antibiotics, such as tetracycline, can also cause staining. In many cases, teeth stains appear simply as a result of age. Regardless of the cause, we have a fast cosmetic option we think you’ll love.

How Does In-Office Whitening Work?

Our office uses powerful bleaching gels to whiten teeth, in many cases in a single appointment. When you arrive, Dr. Franz will perform a detailed examination of your smile and discuss your current cosmetic goals. Prior to applying the whitening gel to your teeth, he’ll make sure to provide a dental dam that protects your gum tissue from the gel. This works to reduce potential sensitivity during the whitening process.

Then, we’ll point an advanced UV light to each of your teeth, making sure the gel is effectively activated and penetrating your enamel. If needed, we can reapply additional layers of bleaching gel until you reach your desired shade. In most cases, you can expect a whiter smile in just one hour.

There are many benefits to gain from teeth whitening, which you can read about below!

Following your cosmetic treatment, you can expect your teeth whitening to lasts years when practicing regular brushing and flossing at home as well as routine exams and cleanings with your LoDo dentist. It also helps to avoid richly-pigmented foods immediately following your whitening treatment and for the next few days afterwards.
