General and Cosmetic Dentistry located in Denver, CO

Botox is more than just a cosmetic treatment! In dentistry, it can be used to help manage a variety of conditions affecting the muscles of the face and jaw. By relaxing overactive muscles, Botox can reduce pain, improve function, and even enhance the appearance of your smile. At RiNo Dental, Botox is offered as a minimally invasive treatment option for patients experiencing TMJ disorders, teeth grinding and clenching, muscle tension, or concerns related to a gummy smile.

Botox for TMJ, Teeth Grinding, Migraines, and Gummy Smiles

Botox isn't just for reducing wrinkles. In dentistry, it can also be an effective treatment for relieving jaw pain, chronic teeth grinding, muscle tension, certain types of headaches, and even improving the appearance of a gummy smile.

At RiNo Dental, Botox is used as both a therapeutic and cosmetic treatment to help patients feel more comfortable and confident. During your consultation, we'll determine whether Botox is an appropriate option based on your symptoms and treatment goals.

Botox for TMJ Disorder

The temporomandibular joints (TMJs) connect your lower jaw to your skull. When the muscles surrounding these joints become overworked or inflamed, they can cause pain and interfere with everyday activities.

Common symptoms of TMJ disorders include:

  • Jaw pain or tenderness

  • Clicking or popping of the jaw

  • Difficulty opening your mouth

  • Pain while chewing

  • Facial muscle soreness

  • Ear pain or pressure

  • Headaches associated with jaw tension

Botox works by temporarily relaxing overactive muscles, reducing the force of muscle contractions that contribute to pain and inflammation. Many patients experience significant relief from jaw discomfort and muscle tension after treatment.

Botox for Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

Many people clench or grind their teeth without realizing it, especially while sleeping. Over time, bruxism can lead to:

  • Jaw pain

  • Headaches

  • Worn or fractured teeth

  • Tooth sensitivity

  • Muscle fatigue

  • Damage to dental restorations

While nightguards help protect your teeth from damage, they don't stop the muscles from clenching.

Botox reduces the strength of the muscles responsible for grinding, decreasing the force placed on your teeth and jaw. As those muscles relax over time, many patients notice fewer symptoms, less discomfort, and a reduction in muscle size caused by chronic clenching.

For many patients, Botox works well alongside a custom nightguard as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.

Botox for Tension Headaches and Migraines

For some patients, chronic headaches and migraines are closely related to muscle tension in the jaw, temples, forehead, or neck.

By relaxing these overactive muscles, Botox may help decrease the frequency and intensity of headaches that are triggered by muscle strain or clenching.

Not every migraine is caused by muscle tension, so we'll discuss your symptoms and medical history to determine whether Botox may be beneficial. Patients with certain migraine conditions may also benefit from coordinated care with their physician or neurologist.

Botox for a Gummy Smile

Some patients feel self-conscious because a large amount of gum tissue shows when they smile. This is often caused by a hyperactive upper lip that lifts higher than normal.

Botox can gently relax the muscles that elevate the upper lip, allowing it to sit slightly lower when smiling. The result is a more balanced smile with less visible gum tissue, without surgery or significant downtime.

Treatment takes only a few minutes, and results typically become noticeable within one to two weeks.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox has been used safely for both medical and cosmetic purposes for many years when administered by properly trained healthcare professionals.

Most treatments are completed in just a few minutes with little to no downtime. The effects are temporary and typically last around three to four months, although this can vary from person to person.
