Dental Cleaning Q&A

Dental Cleanings in Denver

Routine dental cleanings are one of the most important things you can do to protect your smile. Even if you brush and floss every day, plaque and tartar can still build up in areas that are difficult to clean at home.

At RiNo Dental, your preventive visit is about more than just polishing your teeth. Every cleaning appointment includes a comprehensive evaluation of your oral health so we can detect problems early, keep your teeth healthy, and help you avoid more extensive treatment in the future.

The American Dental Association recommends visiting your dentist regularly, and for most patients, that means every six months.

What Happens During a Dental Cleaning?

Your appointment typically consists of two parts: a comprehensive dental exam followed by a professional cleaning.

During your examination, we'll evaluate your:

  • Teeth

  • Gums

  • Bite

  • Existing fillings, crowns, or other restorations

  • Oral tissues for signs of abnormalities

When appropriate, we'll also take digital X-rays. X-rays allow us to evaluate the areas we can't see during a visual examination, including the bone supporting your teeth, the spaces between teeth, developing decay, infections, and other conditions that may not yet be causing symptoms.

Once we've completed your examination, your hygienist will perform your cleaning by:

  • Removing plaque and tartar buildup

  • Cleaning around the gumline

  • Polishing your teeth to remove surface stains

  • Flossing between your teeth

  • Providing personalized recommendations to improve your home care

If fluoride treatment is recommended, we'll discuss whether it's appropriate for your individual needs.

Why Are Routine Dental Cleanings Important?

Many dental problems develop silently.

Cavities often don't hurt until they've become larger, and gum disease can progress for years without causing discomfort. Regular dental cleanings allow us to identify these problems while they're smaller, easier, and often less expensive to treat.

Professional cleanings also help:

  • Reduce your risk of cavities

  • Remove tartar that brushing cannot remove

  • Lower your risk of gum disease

  • Freshen your breath

  • Remove surface staining

  • Monitor changes in your oral health over time

Preventive care is almost always simpler and more affordable than waiting until a problem becomes painful.

Why Can't Brushing Alone Remove Tartar?

Plaque is a soft bacterial film that forms on your teeth every day. If it isn't completely removed, it hardens into tartar (also called calculus).

Once tartar forms, it cannot be removed with a toothbrush or floss. It must be professionally removed using specialized dental instruments. Left untreated, tartar creates an ideal environment for bacteria that can lead to cavities, gingivitis, and periodontal disease.

Can I Get a Cleaning Without an Exam or X-Rays?

This is one of the most common questions we receive.

A dental cleaning is not simply a cosmetic polishing. Before we clean your teeth, we need to determine which type of cleaning is appropriate for your oral health.

Some patients need a routine preventive cleaning, while others require periodontal therapy to treat active gum disease. Those are two very different procedures, and it's impossible to know which is appropriate without first performing an examination.

When indicated, X-rays are also an important part of that evaluation. They allow us to diagnose problems beneath the surface that cannot be seen during a visual exam, including decay between teeth, bone loss, infections, and other conditions that may affect your treatment.

Providing a cleaning without first evaluating your oral health would be like prescribing medication without first making a diagnosis. Our priority is always to provide the treatment that's safest and most appropriate for your individual needs.

How Often Should I Have My Teeth Cleaned?

Most patients benefit from professional cleanings every six months.

However, if you have a history of periodontal disease, frequent plaque buildup, certain medical conditions, or other risk factors, we may recommend more frequent visits to help maintain your oral health.

We'll create a preventive schedule that's based on your individual needs, not a one-size-fits-all approach.
